The rocky coastline is interspersed with sandy bays, with perhaps the most developed resort at Lloret de Mar. It is easy to find quieter resorts at the pretty bays of Calella de Palafrugel and Llafranc.
South of Barcelona is the Costa Dorada ("golden coast"). Sitges has an excellent beach and nightlife. Tarragona was built by the Romans and has an amphitheatre and aqueduct still preserved. Port Aventura to the south is a theme park to rival many with a towering Dragon Khan ride that can be seen from miles around.
If you fancy a trip inland, then visit the hilltop monastery of Montserrat, or the extraordinary Dali museum at Figueres.
This is a fantastic region for food (especially fish) and good wines from the vineyards of Penedes. If you are looking for somewhere relatively undeveloped, then choose the Costa del Azahar that runs down to Valencia and Gandia. It is an area dominated by orange groves, the beaches are superb and usually uncrowded. Flights into Valencia are easy to find. Valencia is perhaps most famous for the "Las Fallas" fiesta where giant paper sculptures are displayed in the streets and ceremoniously burned at the end of the festival. Again, there is plenty to see and most of the monuments are within walking distance of the main square.
