They
say that the region of Almeria has the warmest
weather,
and the best overall climate in southern Spain. The city of Almeria
itself boasts the title of being the city with most hours of sunshine
a year. Truly an area with something for everyone - superb golfing facilities
for the serious golfer and wonderful beaches for those looking for a family
holiday. Easily reached by motorway, the region also has its own airport.
Largely unspoilt, the area is characterised by white hilltop villages,
surrounded by mountains and extensive plains.
In
Almeria
itself, the Alcazaba is the largest fortress built by the
Moors in Spain. Adjacent to it, visitors will find the gypsy quarter of
La Chanca where some families
live in caves with brightly painted facades and modern interiors. On the
coast, you will find the Parque Natural de Cabo
de Gata, with towering cliffs of volcanic rock, sand dunes,
salt flats and secluded coves. Within the confines of this natural park,
the visitor will find a few fishing villages with a sandy bay at San Jose.
The park includes a stretch of seabed 2km wide and the marine flora and
fauna protected within it attract scuba divers and snorkellers.
Slightly to the north, the town of Vera is
a very popular place for sampling the Spanish "Tapas" and a
good place to buy those holiday souvenirs. Vera
is well known for ceramics and pottery.
Truly a golfer's paradise, with summers that start before Easter and last
well into November, some of the top courses are to be found here, including
Cortijo Grande, Marina Golf, Desert Springs
and many more. The most recent, Valle del Este,
promises to be a real treat. The golf course is part of a resort complex
and is only 30kms from the airport. The PGA championship course has panoramic
views and spectacular landscapes, with mountains in the background. The
Valle del Este
resort also includes a 4-star hotel, a health and beauty club (indoor
and outdoor pools), a beach club on the El Playazo
beach at
Vera, restaurants and residential areas offering a variety
of holiday accommodation to suit all needs. A superb location for all
